Terrier Tough Farm

Through outreach, education, and terrier grit, we aim to promote sustainable and ethical agriculture in our central Iowa community.

Our Story

Out of a shared love of gardening and a mutual interest in long-term sustainability, Carly and Cal founded Terrier Tough Farm in 2019. Working with only a quarter acre, an experiment in maximizing food stability on minimal space was underway, including laying hens, resident rabbits, a 24x24 planting bed, a wildflower pollinator garden, a dozen half whiskey barrels, a basement tilapia aquaculture system, and a handful of raised garlic beds.

Since then, the project has taken off and expanded beyond the residential quarter acre of its formation. In March 2020, Terrier Tough Farm began full scale operations with a passion on 10 acres outside of Ames, Iowa. The coming season will see many changes for us; expect to see many more chickens, goats, trees, nice looking and not too expensive shrubbery, and more as the months go on!

Our Goal

There is power in resilience and self-sufficiency, not just at the individual level, but as a community. And, we happen to be starting this adventure during difficult and uncertain times. Luckily, we’re all sitting on the best soil the planet has to offer! Our goal is to build upon a culture of sustainable agriculture in order to promote education of our shared environment and food security in our community.

Get Involved

We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us, and a lot to learn ourselves! In the coming months, we hope to start projects that we can open to the public, on the farm and elsewhere in our community. Stay tuned for more news in this area! And in the meantime, please feel free to ask any questions about what we’re up to; we’re an open book :)
