Our Story

Out of a shared love of gardening and a mutual interest in long-term sustainability, Carly and Cal founded Terrier Tough Farm in 2019. Working with only a quarter acre, an experiment in maximizing food stability on minimal space was underway, including laying hens, resident rabbits, a 24x24 planting bed, a wildflower pollinator garden, a dozen half whiskey barrels, a basement tilapia aquaculture system, and a handful of raised garlic beds.

Since then, the project has taken off and expanded beyond the residential quarter acre of its formation. In March 2020, Terrier Tough Farm began full scale operations with a passion on 10 acres outside of Ames, Iowa. The coming seasons will see many changes for us; expect to see many more chickens, goats, trees, nice looking and not too expensive shrubbery, and more as the years go on!

Our Goal

There is power in resilience and self-sufficiency, not just at the individual level, but as a community. And, we happen to be starting this adventure during difficult and uncertain times. Luckily, we’re all sitting on the best soil the planet has to offer! Our goal is to build upon a culture of sustainable agriculture in order to promote education of our shared environment and food security in our community.
